Responsible Generosity

After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the 2011 tsunami and earthquake in Japan, authorities reported that 60 percent of the donations they received were not needed, so they were discarded and dumped in landfills.

The news from Haiti is heartbreaking. You want to let them know that the world cares. But before you start gathering up stuff to send to the beleagured victims of the recent earthquake and tropical storms, please read this.

And please ask your church, your school, your employer, your radio station, your grocery store, or anyone else urging you to donate stuff to send … ask them also to please read this first, and then help them brainstorm other ways to raise funds to send to experienced and organized relief efforts already on the ground.
