Hester Ford

Hester Ford, who, according to the Associated Press, “grew up picking cotton, got married at 14, and went on to become the oldest living American,” went home to be with God today.

She passed away peacefully in her own home in Charlotte, North Carolina, which she and her husband had bought in 1960. She was either 115 or 116, depending on which census records you believe. Either way, she was the oldest living American at the time of her passing.

Ms. Ford was born on a farm in South Carolina, married at 14, and gave birth to the first of her 12 children at 15. Her husband died in 1963 at the age of 57. At the time she passed away she had 68 grandchildren, 125 great-grandchildren, and at least 120 great-great-grandchildren.

Her favorite activities in her later years were doing puzzles and listening to gospel music.

Rest in peace Hester Ford, and may you be surrounded by Heavenly gospel music forever.
