One of the last things Jesus says when He forgives the criminal being crucified along side Him, is:
“Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Luke 23:43
Why would Jesus say that unless He was going to Heaven on the same day (“today”) that He was crucified?
I’m not a theologian and I hope God will forgive me if anything I say sounds blasphemous – I don’t mean it that way – but this makes me wonder about Jesus and time (and place).
I think that time is not the same for God as it is for humans. God is everywhere all the time. I don’t think God’s time is linear with one day following another day, the way we perceive it. I mean, He created days so He must not be a part of them but outside of them in order to create them
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
Genesis 1:3-5
And Jesus is God.
So I’m not sure it is even a properly formed question to ask, “Where was Jesus on Holy Saturday, before His resurrection?”
Maybe He was where He always is, namely, everywhere at once, with His body in the tomb but also just as much with you and me today, and with the redeemed criminal in Paradise? Because as God, His time is God’s time.
His bodily resurrection occurred the next day in human time, but I’m not sure that Jesus was referring to his human body as “me” when He says, “with me in paradise.,” or “today” as the human understanding of today when He says it will happen “today.”
Or maybe I just need a better understanding of the theology of Jesus dual nature as fully God and fully human.
Grateful to God for His patience – He knows I’m still learning.
